Hi Peter,
Thanks for your kind words.

I heard about Laconi.co at WFP from Jon Thompson at the ICT-KM social media workshop. And reading your post drives the point that microblogging has real use in real situations (vivid scenario, btw), and it's not just a play thing for teenagers.

And I agree completely - use microblogging to add value, and not just because it's there.

Hi Meena,

I'm rediscovering this excellent series you wrote about social media. ;-)

You might also mention identi.ca and the open source version laconi.ca ...

The latter allows you to start a microblogging network on your Intranet so people feel more free to express their opinions and exchange info, without the outside world peeping in.

Laconi.ca is pretty easy to set up and to administrate. See this post on what we did: http://blog.wfplogistics.org/cipcip-it-is-not-what-you-do-but-who-you-do-it-with/

What I have found is to institutionalize early on some form of broad discipline to distinguish the functions of microblogging, Skype and Email, to avoid the fear of 'oh God yet another source of information I HAVE to check'.. Specifically in the functions of direct messaging and replies, there is an overlap with Skype and Email.

Microblogging should be seen as optional, an added value, "to check when I feel like it", but can not become a "must".

As I write this, I am following the role of Twitter in the post-election upraising in Iran. It seems like "The next revolution will be Twittered"

Really nice post! Inspired me to write another one about how organizations can use Twitter:

Micro-blogging: 140 characters of gossip or added value for development organizations?

Thanks for your comments. Am feeling very encouraged here. Looking at the link Simone sent, I'm drawn to what was said about the power of Twitter: "People do have an altruistic nature in Twitter, but it’s human nature that we will help out others that we know will help us out in the future…a lot of this has got to do with the limited time we have in a day…" Any thoughts?

Thanks for this Meena. I'm really curious about Twitter...but afraid that, like so many of these social networking tools, it may become addictive...! This might be the push I need to go and see how I could tap into some of the benefits of microblogging. Looking forward to your next post.

Thanks for this heads-up Meena.

Things move so fast in the Blogsphere, I can't really be sure how tech-savvy or up-to-date I am in these things anymore!

Hi Meena,

Excellent post on explaining Microblogging!

I have been using Twitter just over half a year and love it. I have discovered people with similar interests, sites, tools etc. There are several tools that one can use with Twitter. I have tried Twhirl and TweetDeck (desktop tools) as well as Firefox plug-in TwitterFox.

In case of Yammer, I am just starting to experiment with it. I am also using YammerFox as a plug-in for Firefox.

Keep up the good work! Looking forward to the next post!
