Hey Tasja! Glad you like. I'm learning a little more everyday.
Can you share with us how you find Zotero personally and why you picked it?

Thanks a lot for this Meena! It's a really useful post. I've given del.icio.us a try a couple of times but haven't yet got it working well for me. It was a while back though, so maybe now that I'm getting more tech savvy, and using your advice, I'll try it out again.

Mendeley seems to be just what I've been looking for to organise all those PDF files. I'm downloading it as I write...

I've been using Zotero for storing web based citations. It's also free to download, compatible with Firefox, allows the automatic capture of web-citations (by clicking the icon in the address bar), and can be used offline to access captured web-pages. It is supported by both Word and Open Office, which allows you to cite web-resources quickly and easily. Does anyone else have experience with Zotero?

Meena, that's definitely OK with me. I'm just glad you found it useful and I'm glad to get more people using these new tools.

Petr, yes, actually, it does, and the chemist Mendeleev also. Apparently they were going to name it "Literacula" because it sucks the data out of PDFs, but they thought better of it. LOL.

If anyone has any questions about Mendeley, feel free to ask me via email or comment, and I'm also mrgunn on twitter.

Well, I have just spent 15 minutes looking at Mendeley and I'm so impressed I've uploaded it and transferred all my PDFs to it - amazing! Over the next few weeks I'll be exploring how well it works and how really useful it is.

Very useful post! Thanks for links to various comparisons. Now I am thinking just between Connotea and CiteULike, but discovered the 'power and beauty' of Mendeley (does the name has anything in common with JG Mendel?). So continue to struggle ;o)

I use Mendeley, not mentioned above. I like it not only because it indexes the PDFs I already have and manages my bibliography in Word for me, but because their data could one day overthrow the useless and antique Impact Factor system.

The wikipedia comparison chart is unwieldy. A nice comparison of reference managers that people actually use was compiled by Martin Fenner at Nature Network.

To the scientists reading this blog: do you use any of the online reference management services mentioned in the blog? We'd like to get some examples. What's your experience with any of them?
