E-Publishing

Tens of thousands of pages of information, along with thousands of other 'information objects,' have been produced by the CGIAR over the past decades, and it is projected that thousands more will be generated every year as the result of research carried out by the CGIAR’s 15 Centers. However, despite the ever-increasing quantity of information generated, users often find it almost impossible to easily access and search this vast resource.

Objectives
This e-publishing effort will bring together all of the CGIAR's published science as one body of information - presently it's in at least 15 different formats, structures and locations. Since our science will be more easily accessed through the Virtual Library Service, the respective Centers’ websites or other web searches, it will be more readily available to thousands of new users around the world.

Such an endeavor will also allow Centers to deliver information to users in the most appropriate form (paper, web or CD) and to automate the generation of this output across the entire range of public goods from all the Centers. This will be achieved by building the foundations for media neutral publishing, where information produced by CGIAR Centers will be recorded and stored only once, after which it can be easily searched, packaged and customized for delivery to users.

This activity does not propose the adoption of emerging or leading-edge technologies. It is more of a call for the CGIAR System to improve its publishing approach and standards by applying the tried and tested media neutral publishing practices that are used by today’s science publishing industry.
