Collaborate,
Create, Communicate...
Another
busy month behind us! We have almost finished putting
together our Annual Report, a process that involved
extensive evaluation and reflection this year. As a
result, we are adjusting our plans for the next twelve
months so that we can better serve our stakeholders,
partners and investors.
Our
projects are making excellent progress. Indeed, it’s
now possible for scientists at IRRI to communicate with
their counterparts at CIP, as if they were in the same
room, more Centers are being connected. The CGVLibrary
is making great strides and has been generating a lot of
interest, and a business continuity plan was developed
to suit the specific needs of a
CGIAR
Center
.
This
month’s issue of the ICT-KM News also highlights the
CGIAR’s collaborative efforts with FAO, a partnership
that can only benefit both organizations.
Finally,
if you haven’t already done so, there is still time to
sign up for our Knowledge Sharing workshop in
Africa
.

In
this issue of ICT-KM News:
CGIAR
and FAO Working together in Knowledge Sharing
It is
only through the transfer and exchange of knowledge,
both explicit and tacit, that research organizations can
really have an impact on the global issues that are
facing mankind in the third millennium. Towards this
end, the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the
United Nations and the Consultative Group on
International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) have joined
forces, working collaboratively on several projects.

A Landmark Day
April 7,
2006 was a landmark day in the history of communication
and collaboration in the CGIAR, for it was on that day
that IRRI and CIP became the first two CGIAR Centers to
take part in a video conference using the Access Grid
(AG). This groundbreaking event has far-reaching
consequences that will eventually extend beyond the two
participating institutes and benefit the CGIAR as a
whole.

CGVLibrary

traveled to
India
to advise ICRISAT on business continuity planning (BCP).
During her two weeks in the country, she had detailed
discussions with senior management. She was also able to
relay to ICRISAT the advice that IRRI received from SGV,
a private company that is hired by the project to help
Centers assess their business continuity and IT security
risks and how best to respond to them.

FAO
GeoNetwork Launched
A new
version of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's
spatial data catalogue, FAO GeoNetwork, which provides
agricultural information to decision-makers, allowing
them to access satellite imagery, interactive maps and
spatial databases from FAO, WFP, CGIAR and others, was
launched on 24 April 2006.

Microsoft

Microsoft
India

kiosks aimed at bringing IT benefits to rural
India
. The IT giant has established a public-private
partnership called Saksham (meaning self-sustaining in
Sanskrit), which will also develop a rural portal that
will be launched in three to six months. The content and
applications of this portal, which will be accessible
through the rural kiosks, will help energize the rural
economy.
