Meena Arivananthan originally studied to be a microbiologist. Following her Masters in Molecular Biology, she started out as a Technical Specialist for a scientific firm in her hometown of Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian capital. However, her passion for writing, in particular science writing, eventually led her out of the corporate world into the sleepy fishing village of Batu Maung, Penang, to work for the WorldFish Center in 2003.
It was exciting times as she immersed herself in learning about their research initiatives in the development arena, while honing her skills in communications, training and facilitation as well as knowledge management.
Open to changes and challenges, her latest adventure sees her working with the ICT-KM Program as the Knowledge Management and Sharing Officer based at the WorldFish Center. Having known CGIAR CIO Enrica Porcari from the time the Program Leader was based in Penang, it was an easy transition for Meena to make, joining the dynamic team in January 2009.
every minute of her new position, she has her hands full in developing knowledge sharing materials for the Program. Sharing know-how is something she is passionate about, having recently created a niche for herself with her easy-to-read blog series on using social media in research and development, a Program endeavor to introduce new social media tools to researchers.
In her spare time, Meena loves to read and travel. She is also an active member of a local community theater group and has acted in a number of plays staged for Penang's discerning audiences. A great believer of work-life balance, all these activities have helped Meena stay grounded in the work place.
